  • How to Find Your Engine Code (and Why Size Isn't Enough)

    Oct 13, 2026
    Replacement engine long block

The most common mistake when buying a replacement engine is matching by size alone. Two engines can both be "2.4L" and still not fit the same car. The engine code is what matters.

    Why size is not enough

The same model can use different engines in different years, trims or markets. Even engines with the same code can differ in mounts, sensors, oil pans or wiring between generations. For example, the G4KJ comes in Gen 1 and Gen 2 versions, and the MR20 comes in port-injected (MR20DE) and direct-injected (MR20DD) versions that are not interchangeable.

How to find your engine code

    • Your VIN: the 17-digit number on the driver's side bottom corner of the windshield, the driver's door frame sticker, or your registration or insurance card. The VIN tells us the exact engine your vehicle was built with.
    • The engine itself: the code is usually stamped on the block or printed on a label under the hood.
    • Your paperwork: the owner's manual or service records often list it.

What we check before you order

    • The engine code and generation for your exact year, make and model
    • Front-wheel drive vs all-wheel drive differences (oil pans, mounts)
    • Which parts transfer from your old engine (sensors, manifolds, wiring)

Send your VIN and we check it, usually within minutes during business hours (Mon–Fri 9am–5pm, Sat 9am–2pm). If we confirm the fit and it's wrong, you're covered: we exchange it or refund in full and pay the return freight. See our returns policy.
