Hyundai & Kia G4KJ 2.4L Engine Guide: Which Vehicles, Warning Signs, Replacement
The G4KJ is Hyundai and Kia's 2.4L direct-injection (GDI) engine from the Theta II family. It was used in some of the most common Hyundai and Kia models on Canadian roads, so it is also one of the engines we get asked about most.
Which vehicles use the G4KJ?
There are two generations. They look similar, but they are not the same engine, so the year of your vehicle matters.
Gen 1
- Hyundai Sonata 2011β2014
- Hyundai Santa Fe 2011β2012 and Santa Fe Sport 2013β2016
- Hyundai Tucson 2011β2015
- Kia Optima 2011β2015
- Kia Sorento 2011β2015
- Kia Sportage 2013β2016
Gen 2
- Hyundai Sonata 2015β2019
- Hyundai Santa Fe / Santa Fe Sport 2017β2020
- Hyundai Tucson 2019β2021
- Kia Optima 2016β2020
- Kia Sorento 2017β2020
- Kia Sportage 2017β2022
Some models used other engines in the same years (for example a 2.0L turbo or a V6), so always confirm with your VIN.
Common warning signs
The issue owners hear about most is wear in the bottom end (the connecting rod bearings). Signs to watch for:
- A knocking sound that gets louder as engine speed rises
- Oil level dropping faster than normal between changes
- Metal particles in the oil
- An oil pressure warning light
If you hear a knock, stop driving and have the engine checked. Running a knocking engine can turn a planned replacement into a breakdown.
Check for recalls first. Hyundai and Kia ran recalls and warranty extensions on some Theta II engines. Before you pay for an engine, check your VIN with a Hyundai or Kia dealer or on the Transport Canada recall database.
